In the 1850s, Franz Xaver von Schönwerth traversed the forests, lowlands, and mountains of northern Bavaria to record fairy tales, gaining the admiration of even the Brothers Grimm. Most of Schönwerth’s work was lost—until a few years ago, when 30 boxes of manuscripts were uncovered in a German municipal archive.

Compiled by Erika Eichenseer, an expert in Bavarian folklore, and edited by Maria Tatar, chair of folklore and mythology at Harvard, The Turnip Princess finally gives English speakers a chance to share in the magic of these new additions to the folkloric pantheon. And since this combination of fantasy and scholarship is catnip to us ADF-types, we will be gathering to discuss these very adult tales.

Join us Sunday, May 17 at 4pm for an afternoon of imagination, literary discussion, and potluck snacks. The meeting is at a private home in west Ann Arbor; for more information email m.r.rindfleisch@gmail.com.
